An approach to determining the thermal stability of structural ceramics by thermal cycling of specimens with a special notch is considered. Characteristics of thermal
shock resistance are proposed: the magnitude of the loss of crack resistance after thermal shock, the insensitivity of the material structure to defects formed at the apex of the notch as a result of thermal shock, and the degree of their accumulation at the apex of the notch. The test results are given for ceramics made of Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , partially stabilized with Y 2 O 3 (molar fraction 3%), and cermet ZrO 2 -Y 2 O 3 (molar fraction 3%) with the addition of metallic chromium (volume fraction 50%).
